My stairs squeak really bad and I can't figure out how to fix it. It drives me nuts how they squeak so bad. i don't know what to do. I searched and I searched and I couldn't find anything about it. Finally I did though and I wanted to share some tips. So if you have squeaky steps that drive you crazy and don't know what to do, just follow these steps.
It is actually pretty easy to fix you satirs. This is for the steps that don't have carpet. If you do have carpet you can take it off. You want to start at the top of your stairs and work down them. First what you will do is pry off the top of the step with a flat bar. Then you will remove any of the nails or carpet left behind. You will reuses these. Once you have them all off you want to screw the outside stringers to each stud with 4-1/2 in. screws. You want to apply sub floor adhesive along the top of the riser also the stringer and the back of the tread. Now press the tread into place.
Now that you getting the steps to look like steps you want to screw three 2-1/2 screws through the top of the step into the stringer. You want to now go in the back of the step and screw a 2 inch screw through the back of the riser. Do that all the way up and you have a brand new set of stairs. Squeak free.
