Homemade Design, Inc. (HMD) is a full-service interior design firm based in Orange County, CA operating under the design leadership of Amanda Zettel, IIDA. While we do offer traditional interior design services for clients worldwide, we've recently launched affordable online residential interior design packages through our online division at www.HMDhome.com.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
Primarily as a way to market our firm and better serve our customers.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
I launched Amandazettel.net in 2006 when I launched my full service firm.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
Well, the domain name was obviously based upon my namesake... but the name of our firm, Homemade Design, really was a name that I had in the back of my mind for quite some time because it sounds friendly and inviting.
What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?
The experience behind it. I’m one of those people who has to pinch herself in the morning to see if I’m still dreaming, because there’s been so much hard work to get to the point of launching a game changer like Homemade Design. I graduated from Parsons in NYC, and worked for two of the worlds most prominent design firms, in NY and then LA, before launching my full service firm in 2006. Since then, we’ve done everything from restaurants to residences to doggie day care. I absolutely love seeing the looks on our clients faces when we exceed their expectations.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
To create a very powerful brand, known for the highest quality interior design.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
We measure everything. Its all about ROI and that drives our investments.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
We'd bring new innovations to market faster.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
Yes. Our hosting solution is scaleable.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
In our Industry, finding quality local contractors can be the biggest challenge. There is a tremendous amount of due dilligence required to find a reliable professional and arrive at a competitive budget that is going to be reliable.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Again, finding qualified local contractors in cities and countries where we dont have existing relationships.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Establishing partnerships and cross marketing strategies. That seems to impact every traffic variable positively.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
We've been lucky to secure experienced reliable vendors and level set expectations.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
We've been up and running since 2006, god willing it will go on until its handed down or handed over many years from now.
