How To Replace An Outlet

By dustin michael at 10/22/08 13:36

Obviously, the first thing you need to do is make sure the power is off to the outlet. Shut off the power in the breaker box. You can use a circuit tester to make the outlet has no power running to it. if you don't have a tester you can plug something in to the outlet and try to turn it on (i.e. lamp) to make sure there is no power running to the outlet.

Unscrew the receptacle's cover plate. There are two screws holding the outlet to the wall. Remove them. Disconnect the wires from the terminals. Form a curl with a pair of needle-nose pliers so the wires can hook clockwise around the screws. Then you install the new receptacle. Connect the black (hot) wire to the brass terminal screw, the white (neutral) wire to the silver screw, and the bare (ground) wire to the green ground screw.

Screw the outlet back into the wall. Replace the cover. Your done.
